Businesswoman hacked to death

A woman entrepreneur who was operating a restaurant on Welladevaala road, in Unawatuna, Galle was reportedly hacked to death using sharp weapons, Habaraduwa Police said.

Police investigations revealed that two persons who had arrived on a motorcycle to her cafeteria in the early morning yesterday had attacked the woman with sharp weapons and killed her within the business premises. At the time of death, she had been there with her seven-year-old child.

The deceased was identified as Game Kankanamge Niluka Chamali, 36, whose husband is employed overseas. However, the police have probed that the couple had been in dispute over some time regarding the possession of the land and property where the restaurant is being operated.

An alleged incident of soliciting to murder her on a contract of Rs. three million arranged by her husband abroad was reported to the police a few months ago. Subsequently, in connection with the incident, a woman and a man were arrested on suspicion by Galle Police in June last year. In that incident, the conspirators had abducted her to a lonely location, forced old cloth into her mouth and tied up her in that house. Later, they had filmed the occurrence to be sent to her husband living in overseas.

The magisterial inquest into the murder was to be held yesterday evening. Habaraduwa Police are conducting investigations.
