Power and Energy Ministry in Rs. 622 bn debt

Power and Energy State Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage told the media that the Ministry of Power and Energy had become one of the most corrupt institutions during the last four years, to the extent that the Ministry has incurred a loss of Rs. 622 billion.

“Not a single megawatt of energy has been added to the national grid. According to their plans, the next power plant was to be commissioned only in 2023. The reason that this has been delayed is so that the former government can resort to emergency power purchases and profit from those agreements,” he said.

He revealed that the unit price of electricity was only Rs. 32, but former Minister Ravi Karunanayake had told the then Cabinet that it was Rs. 72. The unit price of solar power is Rs.12, but the government had instead charged Rs. 22.

“Many of these individuals including the former Secretary to the Ministry should be behind bars,” he said. “But we are not the ones to make those decisions. We will leave that to the courts.”
