Champika remanded over 2016 hit-and-run

Victim permanently disabled:

Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka was taken into police custody on instructions by Attorney General Dappula De Livera yesterday (18).

Produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday night, former Minister Ranawaka was ordered to be remanded till today.

The Attorney General has given the arrest order in connection with a case where the former Minister had allegedly caused a motor accident in 2016 in which a youth was critically injured.

Ranawaka is alleged to have been driving the jeep when the accident took place.

It has also been alleged that Ranawaka had fled the scene and produced his driver as the one who caused the accident.

A court order was earlier issued preventing Ranawaka from travelling overseas over this case. The travel ban has also been imposed on his driver over this accident.

The victim motor bike rider suffered permanent disabilities.

A statement was obtained from him for about an hour at the CCD.

Later, Ranawaka was taken out of the CCD in a Police SUV and produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.

UNP MPs Sajith Premadasa, Dr. Harsha de Silva, Eran Eickramaratne, Ashok Abeysinghe, S.M. Marrikar and political activist Shiral Lakthilaka arrived at the CCD when Ranakawa was bought to the CCD.

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe also arrived at former Minister Ranawaka’s residence following his arrest.
