The Consumer Affairs Authority has issued new directives to manufacturers and traders of food wrappers (lunch sheets) making it mandatory to indicate the material used and food grade quality on each and every packet or bundle of food wrappers.

The new directives will however come into effect only from June 1, 2020 with a six-month grace period for manufacturers and traders to conform to them.

The extra-ordinary gazette notification has been issued by Consumer Affairs Authority Chairman Dr.Lalith Senaweera last week. The gazette had been issued under the provisions of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act.

According to the gazette, each and every lunch sheet bundle should indicate ‘Brand Name, Maximum Retail Price, Name and Address of the Manufacturer, Date of manufacture and shelf life, Material used (Virgin PLA, Starch, PABT), Material Declaration (Food Grade and Biodegradable/Compostable), Central Environment Authority Registration Number, Size of a wrapper (in cm/inches) and the Number of wrappers in a packet/bundle’ in all three languages.
