What matters now is to win hearts - Ven. Rathana Thera

Founding member of the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) Athuraliye Rathana Thera yesterday (28) said the new government will win the hearts of the minorities who did not vote for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the presidential election.

The Thera was addressing a gathering at the Sadahamsevana International Buddhist Information Institute.

“What matters now is to win the people’s heart, especially in North and East. Those people have been against us for a very long time. In the future, special programmes to uplift the people of that areas will be launched. These areas have so many economic and cultural problems that we have to resolve,” the Thera said.

“A high number of the people including widows don’t have jobs and other necessities. We didn’t get their votes, but we will win their hearts by providing them with what they need most. We do not let so-called racist politicians to turn them against the government,” the Thera said.

“The minorities have nothing to fear; we will discuss with everyone to overcome our differences. Let them put their fears aside. Let’s build a united country,” the Thera said

The Thera said that MP R. Sampanthan had called for the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to work with government. “This is a positive sign. We must see the development and progress of the country and the people. When the country develops so does everyone else. We will talk to them and come to terms for the betterment of everyone.

“The election is over. We should go ahead. We will win the hearts of everyone of this country. I believe all the problems emerge because of cultural and economic backwardness. Poverty should be eradicated. The President will develop the country and eradicate its poverty. He is our President; we all should support him,” Ven. Rathana Thera said.
