Sharp drop in vegetable prices

There has been a sharp drop in the wholesale prices of vegetables due to the large stock of produce currently being received at the Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre, farmers and traders said.

Farmers said low country vegetables are received in abundance over the produce of other parts of the country.

Traders said the price of beans had dropped from Rs.40 to Rs.20 per kilo during the last three days.

Some farmers who bring their vegetable stocks for sale tend to take their stocks back home due to the low prices offered by traders – farmers said.

“Except for Carrots, Leeks and Beetroot other varieties of vegetables fetched prices between Rs. 10 to Rs. 50 per kilo at the Dedicated Economic Centre,” farmers said.

Another factor responsible for the falling prices was the drop in the retail and wholesale traders visiting the centre to buy stocks,” traders said low prices are expected to prevail for a considerable period according to trade sources at Dambulla.

“Large stocks of Cooking Melon, Cucumber, Luffa, Brinjal, Snakegourd, Bitter Gourd, Tomatoes and Ladies Finger are going waste due to lack of buyers at Dambulla,” traders said.
