Chathuni, a karate star in the making

Chathuni Mandini Galbadage of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo is a young talented karateka who has proved her skills at local and international level.

17-year-old Chathuni brought glory to her motherland with a Gold Medal in Junior Individual Kumite event at the 5th South Asian Championship held in Bangladesh this year. She also won the silver medal at 4th South Asian Championship held in Sri Lanka in Individual 14-15 years Kumite event in 2017. Chathuni bagged Bronze Medal in Individual Kumite in the12-13 year category event at the 7th Asian Silent Knight Karate Cup at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2016 while representing Kata Team event and winning Silver Medal in the championship.

Chathuni showed her talent at a very tender age excelling at local karate competitions where she clinched several medals. She won the Silver Medal at All Island School Games in 2017 in Under 16 Open Kyu Individual Kumite event. Also she became the champion in Individual Kumite (14-15 year) event at the Sri Lanka National Karate Championship in 2017.

In 2016 Chathuni won two Gold Medals in Under 15 Open Kyu Individual Kumite event at All Island School Games and Under 15 Individual Kumite event at Sri Lanka Schools Senior Karate Championship. At the Sri Lanka National Karate Championship she obtained Silver Medal in 14-15 Years Individual Kumite Event.

Chathuni secured Bronze Medal in Under 15 Individual Kumite event at Sri Lanka Schools Senior Karate Championship in 2015.

Chathuni is a member of Schools National Karate Pool since 2015 while she was awarded colours at Western Province School Games. She is a former student of Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya, Nugegoda and Sensei Naditha Soysa is her main instructor. Sensei Parakrama, Sensei Kalyana, Sensei Dinesh and Sensei Thushara are the other instructors who assist Chathuni in karate.

Chathuni also keen on dancing where she has won several medals at Provincial level. She is a member of the Bronze Medal winning dancing team at the Western Province Inter-school Dancing and Ballet Competition in 2014 and a member of the Silver Medal winning dancing team at the same competition in 2011.

She was a junior prefect at the Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya and was a member of the school primary Eastern band. Her keen interest on environment made her an active member of the school Environmental Society.

Chathuni has won the Best Performance award at ‘Delisa’ Zonal level in 2011 and also won the second place in Sinhala creative writing at the Zonal level in 2009.

Chathuni hopes to continue her karate career while striking a good balance with her studies. She thanked her parents and all who supported her in her endeavours.
