SB’s bodyguards injure two in firing

First gun violence in Prez poll 2019

The first shooting of the 2019 Presidential election campaign occurred at Ginigathhena in the Nuwara Eliya District yesterday evening when personnel of SLPP supporter and Parliamentarian S.B. Dissanayake’s security detail opened fire at people on the roadside who appeared to be in the way of the politician’s vehicle convoy.

Two persons were injured in the shooting, police said. The injured persons were initially treated at the Kaligama hospital and later transferred to the Karawanella hospital. Police Media Spokesman SSP Ruwan Gunasekera said officers in Dissanayake’s back-up security vehicle had opened fire at the persons blocking the convoy.

The shooting marks the first gun violence of the 2019 Presidential election season which had been one of the quietest since the violence-ridden elections during the previous regime.

Reacting to the violence last night, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera told the Daily News: “Killers kill, what else do you expect from them?”

NPP presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake commented that, just one week before the Election Day, the violence was an eye-opener for the voters. “This is how they conduct themselves, even when they are not in power,” Dissanayake told the Daily News referring to S.B. Dissanayaka’s current political affiliation.

S.B.Dissanayake is a SLFP member currently campaigning for Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
