Refrain from divisional, party politics – Bishop

“War of words we found between political parties suggests that it has become more of a war of hate with the use of language not suitable for viewing by children or adults,” Church of Ceylon's Kurunagala Bishop, Rt. Rev. Keerthisiri Fernando said in a statement with regard to the upcoming Presidential Election.

“What should be our response as religious leaders? We must take care that we do not engage in divisional and party politics. We have maintained a clear stand on this matter even from earlier years. We must use words of building up and not hatred or division,” it states

“As we leave party politics, we must also be careful of making it our responsibility to engage in the politics of peace, love and harmony. These must defeat anger, hatred and division while building patience, tolerance and happiness,” the statement further notes.

“Christians, as any other citizen, must also use his or her vote accordingly to elect the most suitable, honest and independent candidate to lead the country.

"Live in freedom, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God,” the statement said.
