CID arrests Avant Garde maritime security head at BIA

The head of the controversial Avant-Garde Security company’s Maritime Security Division, Vishwajith Nandana Diyabalanage, who is wanted in connection with the floating armoury case, was arrested by CID officers as he arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday morning.

According to the Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara, Diyabalanage was arrested with regard to the on-going prosecution over unlawful possession of 816 automatic weapons and over 200,000 live ammunition rounds, which were taken into custody from the merchant ship run by Avant-Garde.

The CID unit at the BIA, Katunayaka, had apprehended the suspect upon his arrival at the airport from Singapore at around 12.15 am yesterday on flight SQ 468 from Singapore.

The suspect, who is a resident of Kalapaluwawa, Rajagiriya, was later handed over to the CID headquarters for further investigations. He had reportedly travelled to Singapore despite a travel ban imposed on him by the courts.

The Head of Avant-Garde’s Maritime Security Division Vishwajith Nandana Diyabalanage, a resident of  Kalapaluwawa, Rajagiriya was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department  this morning.

The CID unit of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) had apprehended the suspect upon his arrival at the airport from Singapore at around 12.15 am today onboard SQ 468 aircraft from Singapore.
