Speaker Karu Jayasuriya expressed willingness to contest the upcoming presidential election having considered many requests made by the Maha Sangha and other religious leaders, various civil society organisation heads, university lecturers, intellectuals of various fields, professionals and youth organisation representatives.
Issuing a statement, the Speaker said, “Over the past several weeks some of these representatives met me personally, called me over the phone and even made appeals during media briefings, urging me to consider contesting the presidential election based on several specific issues. The common request by all these groups was that they were making this appeal for a reliable leadership who could to preserve democracy within the country and establish a cultured and decent governance, controlling the current political complexities. I would firstly wish to extend my gratitude to the clergy and all others who placed such immense trust in me.”
