Traffic OIC hit and run Defender suspect released

The driver of the Defender vehicle, Ratnayaka Mudiyanselage Navindu Umesh Ratnayake, who was arrested over the hit and run accident that killed the Borella Traffic OIC was released on a surety of Rs.200,000 by Colombo High Court Judge Gihan Kulathunga.

The case was fixed for further trial on December 19. The Attorney General filed indictment in the Colombo High Court against Navindu Umesh Ratnayake, the driver of the vehicle involved in the road accident that caused the death of Borella Police Traffic OIC, IP Ananda Sagara Sarathchandra.

IP Sarathchandra had been en route to the Kollupitiya Police Station, when the motorcycle he was riding was hit by a speeding Defender in Bamabalapitiya last February. IP Sarathchandra, who was critically injured, died while receiving treatment at the National Hospital ICU after two weeks.

The Defender involved in the crash had fled the scene and was later found by Police in Pelawatte, Battaramulla. Bambalapitiya Police had arrested eight persons including MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s son and a woman in connection with the hit-and-run accident.

They are on bail now. They were accused of concealing evidence and sheltering a suspect.

Four suspects are passengers in the Defender vehicle and the other three suspects are the driver and the passengers of the Prado vehicle that followed the Defender.

The Police seized the Defender. Senior Counsel Ashoka Weerasuriya, Attorney Ajith Pathirana and Kithsiri Liyanage appeared for the defence.
