Lakshmi Victoria becomes new president of Netball Federation

Asian Netball vice president Lakshmi Victoria was elected uncontested as the new president of the Sri Lanka Netball

Federation at the AGM held at the Sports Ministry Auditorium yesterday.

Victoria who was the former president and also the vice president of the previous committee returned to the top post following her opponent Mercantile Netball Association president Sanjeewani Wanasinghe’s last minute withdrawal for the post of presidency.

All the other officials were elected uncontested to their respective posts.

Victoria a talented administrator was senior manager of People's Bank and Volunteer Lieutenant of the Sri Lanka Army. She was involved actively in netball to develop it in the past few years.

Champa Gunawardena was elected secretary and Padma Jayantha is the new treasurer.

Thirty-four associations were eligible to vote but only 24 participated at the election. Schools Netball Association took part as an observer.

The period of the former elected body headed by Trixi Nanayakakkara ended last April and due to allegations the Sport Ministry appointed an interim committee to run netball.

More objections were submitted regarding voting rights of associations and the holding of the elections was heading for a postponement, but the Sport Ministry made every effort to sort out the problems and conducted the election as scheduled yesterday.

Following are the office bearers elected to the Sri Lanka Netball Federation (all uncontested): President - Lakshmi Victoria, Secretary - Champa Gunawardena, Treasurer - Padma Jayantha, Vice President – T.M.P. Kumarihamy, Asst Secretary - Sumithra Wanasinghe, Asst Treasurer - Hiranthi Senanayake.
