SLPC Journalism course begins

The inauguration ceremony of the first batch the Certificate Course in Journalism, which is conducted by Sri Lanka Press Council (SLPC), was held yesterday at the Mass Media Ministry Auditorium under the patronage of Defence and Mass Media State Minister Ruwan Wijewardene.

Delivering the keynote speech at the occasion, Course Coordinator Dr. Tudor Weerasinghe of Sripali Mandapaya, Colombo University said that global journalism has marked a turning point in the history of journalism.

“The concept of traditional journalism has changed significantly with the development of science and technology, digitalisation, liberalisation and commercialisation. This is a radical change from the way traditional journalism works,” he said.

Dr. Weerasinghe stressed the importance of producing more and more convergent journalists to meet future demand in the field of journalism. “The convergence journalism which includes text, audio and visual communication focuses on the public’s demand for easily accessible news which can be easily searched in various mediums and outlets,” he added.

Mass Media Ministry Secretary Sunil Samaraweera, SLPC Chairman Koggala Wellala Bandula, Professor Sunanda Mahendra, Press Commissioner Niroshan Thambavita, Director General of Government Information Department Nalaka Kaluwewa also participated in this occasion.
