The Acting OIC of the Welambada Police Station, IP Bandula Bandara has been interdicted for attempting to return knives and other sharp weapons seized from a mosque during the raids carried out following the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera told news media.
According to the Police, the Acting OIC had attempted to return 76 manna knives and 13 axes to the relevant mosque without the authorization of any higher official. The number of sharp weapons taken into custody had been recorded in the court produce document at the Welambada Police Station.
The OIC who was on special duty was notified of the attempt and prevented the return of the weapons.
“Following the instructions given by the Police Headquarters, the Kandy DIG visited the Welamboda Police Station for investigations. The Acting OIC was transferred to the Kandy Police Station with immediate effect and interdicted,” SP Gunasekara said. Further investigations will be conducted under the supervision of the Police DIG of Kandy District.
