New proposed constitution for SLC presented in Parliament

The newly revised Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) constitution proposal which was developed with views and suggestions from former Sri Lanka cricketers Mahela Jayawardene, Kumara Sangakkara, Roshan Mahanama and Sidath Wettimuny was presented in Parliament by Harin Fernando, Minister of Telecommunication, Foreign Employment and Sports yesterday.

The Minister handed over the report to general secretary of Parliament Dhammika Dassanayake in Parliament and said the former Ministry of Sports and interim committee were in agreement to a revised constitution of Sri Lanka Cricket especially in connection with the election system.

“We decided to hand over the report to the general secretary of Parliament and now it is a public document. We also requested Parliament Speaker to bring it up for debate in Parliament,” said Sports Minister Fernando speaking at a media conference held at the Foreign Employment Ministry at Battaramulla yesterday.

“I personally believe after this we will be able to setup a Parliament selection committee to discuss the report further including all the party members with the support of Sri Lanka Cricket,” he said.

“There is no political interference, we have taken this decision for the betterment of Sri Lanka Cricket and according to the Ministry of Sports and the Sports Law there are 66 sports under the Ministry and Sri Lanka Cricket is also among them. There is no special law for anyone. We have explained this to the ICC as well,” the Minister continued.

“I don’t like to setup an interim committee without proper reasons as the ICC is also not happy with such committees. There are issues in the election system of the SLC and many former cricketers like Muthiah Muralitharan and Arjuna Ranatunga have expressed their views on it,” he said.
