The Maragala Mountain range in Moneragala was on fire for three days. About 500 acres of forest land in the area on the Kolonvinna side of the mountain destroyed in the fire.

Moneragala Disaster Management Assistant Director Ravindra Kumara said Air force officers on helicopters doused the fire on Monday.

The Maragala Mountain is replete with valuable herbal and other plants since the era of king Buddhadasa. Hedaoya and Hulandaoya streams spring from the Maragala.

The people in the area said that this was the biggest forest fire that spread in the mountain range in the past few decades.
