The Communist Party of Sri Lanka on Wednesday celebrated its 76th anniversary at its head office in Borella, Speaking on the occasion, SLCP General Secretary D.E.W. Gunasekara said the Communist Party has rendered yeoman service for the future of the country.
Comrades Dr. S.A. Wickremasinghe, Pieter Keuneman, M.G. Mendis, Ven. Udakendewela Sri Saranankara Thera and A. Vaidyalingam, the pioneering leaders of the party provided the philosophy, vision, knowledge, strength and discipline to form and build the party, he said
“Although 76 years is a sufficient period of human life, 76 years is a short period of history in a political movement, especially a movement with a long-term goal of changing a social order.
“History has proved that our position on the national question is correct. We are glad that many parties have come to our position, however late.
It must be remembered that many of our party leaders had to sacrifice their precious lives in order to preserve the party’s stand on policy. Gunasekara said human resources should be utilised when finding a solution to the current situation in the country and the country needs a general election, not a presidential election.
MEP Leader former Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and former Minister A.H.M. Fowzie were present at the event.
