Planter remanded for recklessly laying live wires

Galle Additional Magistrate Pavitra Sanjeewani Pathirana remanded a planter who was prosecuted before her for laying live electric wires irresponsibly in his tea estate and thereby causing the death of a person.

The suspect was remanded until June 26.

The suspect is Paththuwa Arachchi Amila Udayanga, of Komala in Imaduwa, Galle. The deceased was identified as Bala Krisnana Dinesh of Thalgaswala Estate in Nagoda, Galle.

The deceased together with three others had begun employment on the tea estate on June 11 and stayed at the workers’ quarters. On the following morning, they had gone to the estate nursery to sharpen their pruning knives, ignorant of the live wires placed around the nursery to protect it from thieves and wild boars. The victim had then been trapped in the live wires and was electrocuted.

Galle Acting Magistrate P.K.L. Bandara visited the site of the incident for investigation and ordered the body of the deceased to be sent to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for postmortem.

Judicial Medical Consultant U.C.P. Perera who held the autopsy declared that death was due to electrocution.

Sergeant Karunadasa prosecuted the suspect and Imaduwa Police are conducting further investigations on the instructions of Galle DIG Nuwan Wedasinghe.
