Three students killed in accident in Kekirawa

Four students who were waiting for a bus at Korassagalla junction on the Dambulla - Kekirawa road were run over by a cab on Saturday morning.

They were on their way to a tuition class.

They were rushed to the Kekirawa divisional hospital, where three of them died, while the other was sent to Dambulla Weera Denzil Kobbekaduwa Base Hospital in critical condition.

The deceased were identified as Achintha Lakmal Herath (19) an A/L student at Vidyartha Vidyalaya, Kekirawa, and Imantha Pasindu Herath (13) and Eranda Eshan Herath (13), who were Grade 9 students at Kekirawa Central College.

In the meantime, residents of the area staged a protest over the incident and burned tyres blocking the A9 road. Police officers who arrived at the scene managed to quell the protest.

Kekirawa Magistrate Nimal Wimalarathna examined the scene and ordered the bodies be sent to Anuradhapura General Hospital for the postmortem.

The cab was taken into custody by Ipalogama Police, while the driver had fled.

Police said the cab had come from the direction of Dambulla carrying goods.

Two girls who were also at the bus stand said the vehicle had come at high speed and had run over the victims. They had jumped away to prevent being run over.

Kekirawa Police are conducting further investigations.
