Journalist Ranjith Weerasinghe passes away

Veteran journalist Ranjith Weerasinghe (69) passed away Tuesday, May 21 at home after a short illness. He worked at the Sinhalese daily “Dinamina” as sports and news writer, a sub- editor and a night editor before his retirement from newspapering. He had also been a sub-editor in the news desk of Lankadeepa published by Times of Ceylon.

He leaves wife Jayanthi Dias Abeysinghe, a former sub-editor of Ceylon Daily News and daughter Auchithya Weerasinghe.

Ranjith Weerasinghe was the son of late Mrs. Wimala Weerasinghe and late Editor of Lankadeepa, Wimal Weerasinghe. He was the brother of veteran journalist and lyricist Saman Chandranath Weerasinghe, senior copywriter Jayalal Weerasinghe, journalist and creative writer Bharathi Weerasinghe, Jayalakshmi Weerasinghe, Sunethra Neelamani, and Senarath Weerasinghe.

The family announces that the body of Ranjith Weerasinghe was cremated Thursday (23) at Borella General Cemetery after a family funeral as per a request by the deceased before his death.
