IGP, former Treasury Secretary summoned over Gamini Senarath’s case

The Colombo Permanent High Court-at-Bar yesterday issued summons on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara and former Treasury Secretary P.B.Jayasundara to appear in court on May 13 to give evidence as defence witnesses in a case filed against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Chief of Staff Gamini Sedara Senarath and others.

The prosecution evidence pertaining to the case filed against four accused for illegally transferring of Rs.500 million from Litro Gas to Canwill Holdings Pvt Limited was concluded on last February 12.

Accordingly, defence counsel yesterday submitted a list of defence witnesses including IGP Jayasundara and former Treasury Secretary. Defence evidence to be commenced on May 13.

On a previous occasion, the Court ordered to acquit and release the third accused, former Samurdhi Commissioner Neil Bandara Hapuwinna from the case owing to lack of evidence against him during the prosecution’s evidence. However, the Permanent High Court-at-Bar decided to proceed with further trial against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Chief of Staff Gamini Sedara Senarath, former Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Managing Director Piyadasa Kudabalage and Lasantha Bandara.

When the case came up before the Trial-at-bar bench comprising High Court Judges Sampath Abeykoon (President), Sampath Wijeratne and Champa Janaki Rajaratne, the case was fixed for further trial on May 13.

The accused had been charged under the Penal Code, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and the Public Property Act. The Attorney General alleged that the accused had committed this offence between February 1, 2014 and January 20, 2015.

Deputy Solicitor General Thusith Mudalige appeared for the Attorney General. President’s Counsel Gamini Marapana, Anil Silva PC, Ali Sabry PC and Senior Counsel Navin Marapana and Nalinda Indatissa appeared for the defence.
