Court rejects Gamini Senarath's request; Hapuwinna released from the case

Colombo Permanent High Court-at-Bar  rejected a request made by three accused including former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Chief of Staff Gamini Sedara Senarath that they be acquitted and released from the case without calling defence evidence.

Accordingly, Permanent High Court-at-Bar decided to proceed with further trial against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Chief of Staff Gamini Sedara Senarath, former Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Managing Director Piyadasa Kudabalage and Lasantha Bandara.

However, the Court ordered to acquit and release third accused former Samurdhi Commissioner Neil Bandara Hapuwinna from the case owing to lack of evidence transpired against him during the prosecution evidence. The court observed that the reasons led to the acquittal of third accused would be announced during the final judgment.

When the case came up before Trial-at-bar bench comprising High Court Judges Sampath Abeykoon (President), Sampath Wijeratne and Champa Janaki Rajaratne, case was fixed for further trial on May 6.
