Defender driver further remanded

The driver of the Defender vehicle, Navindu Umesh Ratnayake, who was arrested over the hit and run accident that killed Borella Traffic OIC, IP Sarathchandra was further remanded till March 18 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Shalani Perera.

Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Traffic and Safety Road, Attorney-at-Law Ajith Rohana appearing on behalf of the Police Department informed the court that it is required to conduct a postmortem into the death of IP Sarathchandra.

DIG Ajith Rohana further told court that it is necessary to conduct the identification parade regarding the suspect. DIG Rohana further said that IP Sarathchandra who was receiving treatment at the National Hospital ICU died on last Saturday (9) night after two weeks.

Attorney-at-Law Nalin Indratissa appearing on behalf of the rights of former MP Priyankara Jayarathne pleaded to release the second vehicle that followed the Defender, to its real owner.

DIG Rohana further stated that they have found some issues relating to the legal validity of the registration of the defender jeep, involved in this accident.

Meanwhile, Bambalapitiya Police had arrested eight persons including a son of MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage and a female in connection with the hit-and-run accident. They are currently out of bail. They were accused for concealing evidence and sheltering a suspect. Four suspects are passengers in the Defender vehicle and the other three suspects are the driver and the passengers of the Prado vehicle that followed the Defender. The Police also seized the Defender vehicle.

The Magistrate ordered the Police to take necessary steps to conduct the identification parade on next inquiry date. The Magistrate fixed further inquires for March 18.
