CID Sergeant arrested accepting bribe

A Police sergeant attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was arrested by officers of the Bribery Commission while accepting a bribe of Rs.80,000 from a businessman in the Kelaniya area yesterday.

Bribery Commission sources said the CID officer allegedly solicited a bribe from the businessman promising him not to file a court case related to a cheque fraud.

The Sergeant had been arrested while accepting the bribe from the businessman.

The Bribery Commission had received a complaint with regard to this incident a few days back and had initiated an investigation which led to the arrest. Bribery officers are also investigating whether several other police officers are also involved in the incident.
