EC planning to publish audited accounts of political parties on-line

The Elections Commission is planning to publish the annual audited accounts and the constitutions of the registered political parties on its website.

Commissioner General of Elections M.M. Mohamed said this decision has been taken considering the increasing demand from the public for these documents.

“Publishing such documents on the website will facilitate the public to refer to them easily. Currently, we issue the copies of those documents, which are in our possession by charging a fee from the public.”

He said that they received many requests for those documents even through the Right to Information (RTI) Act. “But, we have to face many difficulties when issuing such copies to the public, as they belong to a third party. We have to seek permission from the relevant party under Section 29 (2) of the RTI Act,” the Commissioner General said.

According to him, the Elections Commission has already informed about their new initiative to the registered political parties and the responses are yet to be received by them.

He also said that the Commission had not decided on a date to commence publishing these documents on the website, but, would do so in the near future, after the consent of the political parties had been obtained.

Currently, the Commission’s website publishes only the name, symbol, the General Secretary’s name and the contact details of the recognized political parties on its website.
