Compensation for ‘Sena’ hit farmers

Agriculture Minister P. Harrison said he will seek Cabinet approval to pay compensation to farmers affected by the Fall Army-worm (FAW) or Sena.

The Minister said 20 percent of maize cultivated lands had been destroyed due to the worm and various measures to curb this menace had been taken.

He further said that none of the FAW affected countries has succeeded in finding a permanent solution for this.”Since we have to deal with food crops we cannot use strong toxins to destroy the FAW. Still we are conducting various experiments to find a permanent solution for this,” he added.

The Agriculture Ministry has declared a National Fall Armyworm Control period from January 16 to 31 to accelerate the effectiveness of FAW eradication activities with the assistance of regional agrarian officers, university students and academics.
