Youth receives seven years’ RI

A suspect found guilty of sexually abusing a 65-year-old woman was sentenced to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs.10,000 by Kurunegala High Court Judge Menaka Wijesundara on Wednesday morning.

The accused was also ordered to pay Rs.100,000 as compensation to the victim. He was also ordered to serve an additional six months in default of the fine and compensation.

The suspect is a resident of Galgamuwa, Kallanchiya. He was charged withe the sexual assault of R.M. Somawathi, a resident of the same area. State Counsel Charaka Dharmasiri told court that the accused had held the victim at knife-point before committing the crime. She had later been admitted to the Galgamuwa Base Hospital for a medical examination.
