Special operations to minimise crime, traffic accidents:Police

Last year, 14 special operations had been launched covering the whole country, on the directives of the IGP. During such operations, 12,984 persons with warrants against them were arrested.

In addition, 7,094 drunk drivers had also been arrested through special operations conducted islandwide.

During these operations, the Police have also arrested 9,087 suspects in connection with illegal drugs and alcohol related offences.

The Police had also arrested 49 persons for having in their the possession firearms without proper permits and 10,305 suspects wanted for various offences and crimes. Further, 771 illegal sand miners and other offenders were also arrested during these operations carried out by the Police.

Totally, 40,290 suspects have been arrested during the 14 special operations carried out last year on the orders of the IGP. With regard to traffic violations, 69,693 suspects were arrested during these country wide operations, while the Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara noted that these special operations had been carried out to minimise traffic accidents and other crimes.
