International Buddhist confab from today

The International Association of Theravada Buddhist Universities 5th International Conference 2018 will be held on November 27 and 28 in Colombo.

It will be hosted by the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka under the patronage of the government.

The inaugural session of the conference will be held today at Hotel Galadari from 9 am to 12.30 pm with President Maithripala Sirisena as the Chief Guest. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Education and Higher Education Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and Higher Education State Minister Mohan Lal Grero will participate.

Maha Nayaka Theras of the Three Chapters and Most Ven. Ashin Gnanissara, Sangaraja and Chancellor of Sitagu University, Myanmar will be present. Conference Joint-Secretaries are Prof. Samantha Ilangakoon, Dean of the Faculty of Buddhist Studies and Dr. Waruni Tennakoon, Head of the Department of English, Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka.

The conference is themed ‘Treasures of Theravada Buddhism’. The sub themes are Propagation and Preservation of Theravada Buddhism, Buddhism and Global Issues, Traditional New Trends in Theravada Buddhism, Rites and Rituals in Theravada Buddhism, Buddhism to a Pluralistic Society, Buddhist Heritage in Asia and Tradition of Pali Education and its New Dimensions.

The keynote speaker is Prof. Asanga Tilakaratne of the University of Colombo and the Conference Chair is Vice Chancellor of Buddhist and Pali University Ven. Senior Prof. Gallalle Sumanasiri Thera. Presentation of academic papers will take place today at Hotel Galadari and throughout the day tomorrow from 8 am at the Buddhist and Pali University premises, Homagama with the contribution of Buddhist scholars from Sri Lanka and other countries.
