The CH & FC fifteen-a-side rugby team led by former Sri Lanka national rugby captain cum flanker Yoshitha Rajapaksa left the island yesterday to play against Doha Rugby Football Club (Doha RFC) in Doha-Qatar in preparation for the upcoming Dialog inter-club league rugby season.
Sri Lanka national sevens captain Sudarshana Muthuthanttri, centre Nishon Perera, scrum half Sudam Sooriarachchi and winger Naveen Heenakankanamge were not part of the team due to the upcoming Asian Sevens series third leg in Colombo.
The match will be played at the Doha Rugby Football Centre in Dohar, Qatar at 5pm today.
“We arranged this tour as we could not get to play a single practice match against any of our local clubs due to the upcoming season’s tight league schedule where we are going to face as per extra play off matches scheduled by the Sri Lanka rugby (SLR) according to their new tournament rule,” said CH & FC vice-captain Rohitha “Chichi” Rajapaksa.
“According to the Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) decision, we are going to play and get exposed against foreign players in the upcoming season, so we thought it is better to get some tackling practices for our boys by playing against much bigger opposition from Doha RFC,” he said.
In this game there will be a lot of talented rugby players from clubs as well as the schools and hopefully they will wear the CH jersey. There is a possibility that some of them can even be in the starting line-up today, promoting the trend they have been following for the last two seasons.
