Right to information ensured for all citizens - DG

Right to Information Commission Director General Piyathissa Ranasinghe yesterday said the government was able to empower the Right to Information Act, to ensure the people’s right to information.

He said people in 112 countries in the world have been ensured their right to information and Sri Lanka is the latest country in the region, to guarantee this right to its citizens.

Ranasinghe was speaking at a special programme held at Nelli Star hotel in Vavuniya aimed at sharing the experiences of information officers in the Northern Province .

A series of workshops are to be held covering all provinces in the country to share the experiences of information officers, on the directive of Finance and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera under the supervision of Ministry Secretary Dr.R.H.S. Samaratunga.

Senior officials of the Finance and Media Ministry participated in this programme sponsored by the UN Development Program.

Ranasinghe said President Maithripala Sirisena had pledged the country that he would ensure the right to information of all citizens through his election manifesto at the last Presidential election and he was able to ensure this right by bringing in the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
