Sri Lanka Veteran athletes excel at NVAM in India

The Sri Lanka Veteran Mercantile athletic team that won 98 medals in Mangalore.

 

Sri Lankan Veteran Mercantile athletic team came up with a creditable performance to clinch 98 medals in the first National Veterans Athletic Meet (NVAM)held at Mangalore, India on November 26 and 27.

Forty-seven competitors from Sri Lanka took part and they won 45 gold, 26 silver and 27 bronze medals. In the women’s events Udula Peiris of Lake House won a silver medal and a bronze while Sanjeevi Jayasuriya (Lake House) won a silver medal.

In the men’s events Shyam Kumara of Lake House won a gold medal and a silver medal while Namasiri also of Lake House won a gold medal and three silver medals. Raj Kandiah served as the manager of victorious Lankan team.

Mercantile Athletic Federation (MAF) president Sydney Ratnayake praised the Lankan team for bagging the highest medal tally in an international veterans’ event and said he is proud to be the MAF president at this historic moment.

India fielded 750 athletes from eight states for this meet. The Lankan athletes returned to the country last night.
