Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing a meeting that followed the distribution of gifts to children at the childrens ward at Tangalle base hospital to mark international childrens day said he saw for himself the dead bodies of children as a result of the Kebithigollawa bomb explosion by the LTTE terrorists. He said that he brought to an end the ferocious LTTE terrorist war for the sake of the children of this country.
He said that the children are an asset and a legacy for a country and as such they should be protected as precious gems. He said there are unscrupulous elements that lead children on wrong paths for monitory gain. Hence, parents must be vigilant about the vulnerability of their children. there are institutions in the country for the protection of children. These institutions should be vigilant about child abuse and sexual abuse of children and bring the culprits to book and punish them irrespective of their caste, creed, race or political bias.
