No segregation, no collection: Faiszer

Minister Faiszer Musthapha and other officials at the discussion

Representatives of islandwide Municipal Councils decided at a discussion held under the patronage of Minister Faiszer Musthapha at the Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry Auditorium that garbage collection would not be undertaken from November 1 unless they are segregated.

Ministry secretary Kamal Padmasiri said all Municipal Commissioners and officers were present at the discussion. The decision applies to all residences, markets, schools, hospitals and government institutions alike.

This decision requires that garbage must henceforth be segregated as decaying garbage, plastics and glasses.

Several Municipal Commissioners said this method is already in force in some Municipal Councils.

It was revealed that Municipal Councils face many difficulties in waste management due to the non-segregation of garbage.

Minister Musthapha directed secretary Padmasiri to provide equipment and facilities for Municipal Councils to ensure proper and efficient waste management.

The minister said the Environmental Police should also be strengthened to take stern legal action against those who dispose garbage on roads.
