The government plans to set up 670 new national schools in the country to reduce competition for the 376 most popular schools in the country, Public Administration and Management Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara said.
He was speaking at an event organised to celebrate the grant of Rs 500 million for the development of secondary schools in Siyambalanduwa.
The minister said in addition to the Siyambalamduwa Secondary school in the Siyambalanduwa Divisional Secretariat Division, the Vivela Sripali School will also be developed to the same standard.
He added that Rs.1,800 million has been allocated for the development of 121 schools in Monaragala district alone.
Minister Madduma Bandara said that likewise the government has plans to develop two schools to that of secondary level schools in each divisional secretariat division.
“A major issue faced by rural students is the shortage of English language, Science and Maths teachers. Five thousand teachers are to be recruited to address these issues in the future,” the minister said.
“If C.W.W. Kannangara was instrumental in introducing extensive reforms to the country’s education system that opened up education to children from all levels of society, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe deserves the credit fir initiating the country’s second education revolution”, he added.
“A great change has taken place with the setting up of Teacher Training Colleges, National Institute of Education etc. which was a concept of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe,” he said. He also said that the Good Governance government took measures to increase the allocations for education to 6 percent of the GDP whereas the previous government had allocated only 1.4 percent for this purpose.
