The Cabinet yesterday approved a six percent bus fare hike, with effect from August 1.
The minimum bus fare will now be increased from Rs. 8 to Rs. 9. The decision was made following a report submitted to the Cabinet by Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva. A report prepared by an expert committee has taken into account views expressed by all stakeholders including bus association representatives, Transport Ministry sources said.
The expert committee, according to the sources, prepared policies and criteria on bus fare revision taking into consideration the present day needs.The government appointed an eight-member expert committee to look into changing the guidelines of the existing bus fare revision mechanism. The expert committee is slated to prepare another set of proposals which will include guidelines to improve the quality of the overall transport service.
