Demands for Lankan fresh water fish on the rise: Amaraweera

The demands for Sri Lankan fresh water fish in the international market is on the rise, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

The minister made these remarks at a ceremony to launch several development programmes for persons involved in the fresh water fish trade in Kalawewa recently.

Over 300 nets and 20 fishing vessels were handed over to fishermen in Kalawewa. "Sri Lanka has over 10,000 reservoirs around the country. We have to carry out a special programme to breed fish, shrimp and lobsters. We provide fishing nets, boats and other fishing gear for fresh water fishermen. Our goal is to provide such facilities to uplift the livelihood and income of persons involved in the fresh water fisheries trade," the minister said.

Priority will be given for the fresh water fish industry, he said.

Agriculture Minister Duminda Dissanayake and North Central Provincial Council Fisheries Minister P.B. Rathnayake also participated.
