German help to develop Lanka's agriculture sector

Agriculture Minister Duminda Dissanayake meets German Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture Christian Schmidt

 

The German government has agreed to provide assistance to develop Sri Lanka's agricultural sector, Agriculture Ministry sources said.

The sources said Agriculture Minister Duminda Dissanayake and German Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture Christian Schmidt participated in discussions at the Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture in Berlin on January 20.

During discussions, both ministers agreed on a better cooperation to increase bilateral trade in agricultural products and support Srik Lanka's agricultural sector.

The German minister agreed to transfer German expertise and know how in developing the potato seed production system in Sri Lanka, assistance in development of farm machinery for small farm holders, the establishment of paddy, vegetable, fruit and seed processing facilities and storage and processing of fruits, vegetables, spices and grains for export.

Minister Dissanyake held these discussions after attending the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture 2016 in Berlin with the participation of agriculture ministers from 65 countries.
