Thejaka dominates Sri Lanka Open Chess Championship

Thejaka Dissanayake emerged as the men’s champion and Pevinya Peiris claimed the women’s championship at the Sri Lanka Open International Rating Chess Championship 2023 held at MJF Centre, Kadubedda from June 29 to July 3.

With an impressive score of 8 out of 9 points, Dissanayake showcased exceptional skills throughout the tournament. FM Isuru Alahakoon also demonstrated great prowess, finishing with the same score but securing the first runner-up position due to tiebreak differences. S Sivathanujan emerged as the second runner-up in the Open category.

In the Women’s category, Pevinya Peiris claimed the championship with a score of 6.5 out of 9 points. The competition was intense, with six players tied for the first runner-up position. Through meticulous tiebreak calculations, W A Chethani Chamathka secured the first runner-up spot, while B P Chanthuli Thanishka De Silva took the second runner-up position.

The tournament, organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE (the World Chess Federation), showcased the brilliance and competitive spirit of chess players from Sri Lanka.

The event featured a Swiss system format with 9 rounds of intense battles, and participants competed across various categories, including open, women’s, age groups, and rating classifications. The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka recognized the exceptional talents of the participants with a total prize pool of nearly Rs one million, accompanied by medals, trophies, and certificates.
