Killer Whale Aquatics’ (KWA) women’s 200m freestyle relay team performed exceptionally well and set a new national record on the first day of the National Swimming Championship which commenced at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Complex yesterday.

The team, consisting of Akithmi Wasalathanthri, Minuri Bartholamuse, Ramudi Samarakoon, and Ganga Seneviratne, finished with a time of 1:55.06, securing the gold medal. They surpassed the previous national record of 1:56.62, which was set by the Visakha Vidyalaya team in 2018.

The Visakha Vidyalaya team, comprising Pujani Rathnayake, Dinagi Gamage, Sanuji Goonathilaka and Dinali Karunadasa claimed the silver medal with a time of 2:02.99. The Bambalapitiya Holy Family Convent team (Jessie Seneviratne, Nethali Outschroom, Amanda Iddamalgoda, and Reshma Rodrigo) won the bronze medal, finishing in 2:03.45.

In addition, Matthew Abeysinghe, representing KWA, achieved a remarkable feat by breaking a 23-year-old Sri Lanka record in the men’s 50m Butterfly final. Abeysinghe secured the gold medal with a time of 25.12, surpassing the previous record of 25.23 set by Gefari Dulapandan in 2000.

The five-day competition will continue until July 2. On the first day alone, eighteen finals were completed, showcasing the talent and achievements of the participating swimmers.
