Stuart Broad captured three wickets as England reduced Australia to 180 for five in pursuit of 281 runs, shortly before tea on the fifth and final day of the first Ashes Test continued at the Edgbaston Cricket Stadium in Birmingham yesterday.

Broad produced a hostile spell of bowling and dismissed the night-watchman Scott Boland following his two wickets on the previous day, after the match had finally got underway at 2.15 p.m. local time due to a wet outfield.

However, opener Usman Khawaja held on determinedly and was batting on 54 along with Cameron Green (21 n.o) with Australia still needing 101 runs to win the match.

Chief scores

England: 393/8 decl and 273

Australia: 386 and 180/5 (Usman Khawaja 54 n.o, David Warner 36, Scott Boland 20, Cameron Green 21 n.o, Stuart Broad 3/42). C.D
