Sri Lanka junior Athletes who took part at the Asian Junior Athletic championship in South Korea were warmly welcomed by Sri Lanka Athletic officials and Sports Ministry officials at the Katunayake Airport .

Sri Lankan juniors took two gold medals , one silver and two bronze medals at this meet while they finished 7th among 45 countries and it was a huge achievement said Sri Lanka Athletic President Rt Major General Palitha Fernando.

We have good promising athletes with potential and they are always very dedicated and coaches and SLA officials give their support to get all success. Actually we wanted to make strong second string. The 17 year old Tharushi Karunaratne who bagged two golds and a silver was the heroine of this meet and she is expected to take part in both Asian Athletics Championships and Asian Games and we expect more medals from her said SLA Chief.

Meanwhile the proud Principal of Walala A. Ratnayake National School Dhammika Herath was among those who welcomed the Sri Lankan junior athletes. I am really proud about my athletes and the key athlete Tharushi Karunaratne is our schools best product. Tharushi won several medals at International level while her achievements are a credit to our school.

Her coach Susantha Fernando who was with the team as a Manager and coach done superb duty while Walala School coach Swarna Palitha and Susantha have big responsibility to build up Walala athletes.

Actually we have good training system at school and as a result always Walala school which also named as National Sports School at Kandy performed well at National junior athletic championships as well as Sri John Tarbet Junior and Senior meets . We have lack of facilities while no proper ground with high standard synthctic track and that is major issue for athletes and they are getting training at our own school grounds and Digana grounds.

However Tharushi this time ran very well at South Korea track . If they would have a good track to train here I am sure they can produce better timing and we can hope for more medals said Walala Principal Dhammika Herath Sri Lanka junior Athletic team who excelled in South Korea
