Former IP gets four years’ RI for theft

A former Police Inspector Sujith Rupasinghe who was found guilty for seizing a car parked in front of a house in Colpetty and selling its engine for parts, was yesterday sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court.

A fine of Rs.10,000 was imposed against him by the Colombo High Court. The verdict was delivered by Colombo High Court Judge Manjula Thilakaratne.

The Colombo High Court Judge handed down the verdict in the case filed by the Attorney General under six counts including forging and selling a plot of land with a house in Colpetty, Colombo while the owners were abroad, forging documents, stealing the car from the house and stealing gold from the house.

However, the Colombo High Court judge pointed out that the prosecution has failed to prove other five charges beyond reasonable doubt except for stealing a vehicle.

The accused was acquitted and released from the other five charges and sentenced him only to the charge of stealing the vehicle. Deputy Solicitor General Suharshi Herath appeared on behalf of the Attorney General.
