Opposition tried to safeguard Janaka

Patriotic United National Party (PUNP) leader Sugath Hewapathirana said that Janaka Ratnayake, the former Chairman of  the Public Utilities Commission, is trying to achieve his political goals by making the government and the people uncomfortable. He said that taking measures in Parliament to remove such a person from the position he was holding was the right thing to do.

Hewapathirana pointed out that even if every reservoir in the country is filled with water to the maximum level, only 30 percent of the electricity needs can be produced from hydroelectric power. He also stated that there is a need to reduce the loss taking into account the situation.

He pointed out that the government had to raise the electricity bill, although it is not popular at this time. He said that the price was raised in order to reduce the losses incurred by the Ceylon Electricity Board and because of this, it has now been able to raise its head to some extent.

Hewapathirana, said Janaka Ratnayake has now publicly announced that he will run as a candidate in the upcoming Presidential election.

He also said tha people like Sajith Premadasa, Wimal Weerawansa, Dullas Alahapperuma, as well as Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna tried to retain Janaka Ratnayake as Public Utilities Commission Chairman of the but it had failed.
