Special Police Unit to be established to maintain religious harmony

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to establish a Special Police Unit to investigate and take action against groups that disturb religious harmony. This decision has been taken according to the intelligence information received by the President that such groups have emerged from different parts of the country and their actions are conducted in an organized manner to embarrass the government and they are not random acts.

After receiving the relevant intelligence information, President Ranil Wickremesinghe instructed the Senior Advisor to the President on National Security and Chief of Staff Sagala Ratnayake yesterday (29) to discuss this matter with the Inspector General of Police and take the necessary steps immediately.

The intelligence information received by the President has revealed that at a time when the country is being stabilized after facing a severe economic instability like never before in history, attempts are being made to damage religious harmony and create rifts among communities to bring the country down again.

The new Police unit will be responsible for keeping an eye on such acts of disruption and preventing things that disturb religious harmony before they reach the society.

“According to the instructions of the President, the new Police Unit will be established at the earliest,” Senior Advisor to the President on National Security and Chief of Staff Sagala Ratnayake said.
