Two arrested over attack on member of Minister Prasanna’s security staff

The Minuwangoda Police have arrested two persons on Thursday (25) evening who had attacked a Police Constable attached to the Gampaha Police and was a member of Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga’s security staff at Pansilgodella, Minuwangoda.

The Minuwangoda Police said that the attack had taken place on a land belonging to the Reggie Ranatunga Scholarship Foundation.

Police said that the assault had been carried out by four persons who had come on two motorbikes.

Police also said that the injured Police officer and the member of the Minister’s staff who were injured in the attack, have been admitted to the Gampaha hospital.

Police said that they had gone to the place to check security as the minister was scheduled to visit this land.

According to the Police, the two suspects arrested in connection with this attack are residents of Pansilgoda Minuwangoda.

Meanwhile, Minister Prasanna Ranatunga yesterday said that the relevant land does not belong to him and he has not taken any steps to acquire it.

Refuting reports on social media that attempts are being made by him to acquire the said land, Minister Ranatunga said that this land belongs to the Reggie Ranatunga Scholarshp Foundation which is incorporated in Parliament as Social Welfare Organization

He said that a vocation training institute was functioning on this land with Korean financial assistance. However, this vocational training centre was later closed as the residents in the areas created many issues.

“The equipment at the centre were donated to Senarath Paranavithana school in Udugampola and the building had been abandoned,” he said.

The Minister added that a number of complaints have been received that nefarious activities are taking place at this centre. The Foundation decided to develop this land for the benefit of the people. He said that the two persons had come under attack, when they went to inspect the land.
