High density of dengue larvae in Western Province - Entomologists

Health Entomologists Association President Najith Sumanasena said yesterday (18) that the density of dengue mosquito larvae in the Western Province is between 20 and 25 on the Bito index. He said that the World Health Organization has estimated that the average mosquito larval density is 5 in the Bito index and that 25 in the Western Province is a sign of a dengue epidemic.

From the beginning of 2023 until now, about 35,000 people were infected with dengue have been reported. He said that the density of dengue mosquito larvae is increasing daily in the Medical Officer of Health divisions because the breeding of mosquitoes is increasing with the decrease in the rain.

He also said that the breeding of dengue mosquitoes takes place in places where clean water is stagnant.

He also said that no matter how many dengue mosquito control programmes are implemented, there is a problem in making the programmes successful if the community’s contribution is less.

As a whole, the number of people infected with dengue is increasing all over the country and the dengue disease is spreading rapidly in the Batticaloa district, Batticaloa District Regional Health Services Director G.Sugunan said.

Dengue control programmes have been implemented in 14 divisions of the district under the direction of the Ministry of Health to control the spread of the disease, and since the beginning of this year, 1150 people have been affected by dengue in the Batticaloa district.

Manmunai Pradeshiya Sabha Secretary Y. Sarveswaran said that dengue control programmes were implemented in villages like Arayampadi and Kangeyanodei belonging to the Manmune Pradeshiya Sabha area and in many areas where dengue cases have increased.

The programme was attended by local council officers and workers, Arayampathi Public Health Officers, other public officials, representatives of Village Development Associations, Bank Managers, Army Officers, Kankeyanodai Community Center members and members of the public.
