Heavy rains expected in South, Ratnapura

* Over 600 families affected so far
* Water level rising in Nilwala and Gin Ganga

Due to the indirect influence of the extremely severe cyclonic storm “Mocha” in the Bay of Bengal showery conditions are expected to continue over the Southern parts of the country today as well, the Meteorology Department said. Some places in Southern province and Ratnapura district may experience showers above 100mm. By yesterday evening 2,275 people from 621 families were affected by the bad weather conditions.

The Disaster Management Center media spokesman Pradeep Kodippili said that however there were no displaced persons due to the bad weather as yet. He further said if rains continue there are risks of flooding and landslides.

Authorities cautioned people living close to Nilwala Ganga and Gin Ganga to to be vigilant about rising water levels. Kodippili said DMC officials, Security Forces and the police were ready to assist affected people during any emergency situation.
