Justice Minister raises issue over House debate on X-Press Pearl issue

Speaker allows debate in a way that would not affect court case

Parliament was adjourned for ten minutes yesterday after Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reform Minister Dr. Wijeyedasa Rajapakshe raised  a point of order during the Parliamentary debate regarding the damage caused by the X-Press Pearl ship and other related incidents. The Minister raised a Point of Order claiming that the debate on the X-Press Pearl disaster is Sub Judice as a court case is pending on the matter.

SJB MP Thushara Indunil moved the ajournment motion yesterday in Parliament regarding X-Press pearl shipreck and getting compensation. The Minister raising several legal arguments said that it is not possible to debate this issue as it is a matter before court. He also stated that he will not participate in the debate as it has a sub-judice effect on the debate.

Then, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena adjourned the House for 10 minutes and called a meeting of Party Leaders to discuss the matter.

However, the adjournment of the House lasted for 1 hour and 40 minutes and resumed at 12 noon, with the Speaker in the chair. Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena informed the House that the debate would be allowed to be held in a way that it would not affect the Court case and debating only the facts regarding the environmental damage that had occurred. Then MP Thushara Indunil began the adjournment debate again.
